IMAGINATIVE PLAY

What You Need

OUTDOOR PLAY

“Outdoor play helps children grow socially, helping them to develop healthy ways of forming friendships, responding to physical interaction, and using their imaginations to entertain each other,” says Dr. Lockwood. “It helps them solve problems, build relationships within their peer group and gain a respect for nature.

Outdoor play can be important for children's development in many ways, including:

  • Social and emotional skills

Outdoor play can help children develop healthy ways to form friendships, respond to others, and practice social and emotional skills like problem solving, turn taking, and self-control.

  • Physical development

Outdoor play can help children develop fine and gross motor skills, and can also help regulate their sleeping patterns.

  • Cognitive development

Outdoor play can help children learn fundamental tasks like exploring, risk-taking, and absorbing knowledge. For example, children can better understand prepositions and geometry concepts by moving around objects and other people. Outdoor play can also promote curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and focus.

  • Vitamin D

A few minutes of sun each day can increase vitamin D production, which is important for strengthening bones and teeth.

  • Mental health

Outdoor play can help children feel more positive and have less anger and aggression. It can also help them develop self-confidence, independence, and self-esteem.

  • Recharging

Outdoor play can help children "recharge their batteries" after intense academic work, and can prepare them to return to learning.
